When they finally got caught, the CIA admitted in the “Family Jewels” to lots of the bad stuff they were accused of doing to Americans. Really, what they did was admit to only the specific instance the evidence pointed to, and promise not to do it again.
In the case of “Project Mockingbird”, you can read their one-page description of the three journalists they got caught wiretapping. The extent of it, however — “Project Mockingbird,” here on paper, vs. “Operation Mockingbird,” what really happened — totaled 50 journalists the CIA had to come clean about to the Church Committee. Meanwhile, journalist Carl Bernstein counted some 400 in his own investigation.
